Which guitar did you use in your new record?
"I played all the acoustic guitar and all the rhtythm guitar and I did one guitar solo."
Where do you put your voice in the mix?
"Slightly behind. In all the records that I love, that I listened to when I was growing up the voice is never upfront, because the voice should be part of the band and I don't like when it's in your face"
How do you interact with Johnny Marr?
"He doesn't listen to the track until he gets in the studio. He sets his equipment and the first time he listens to it is when he plays for the first time. And then he just reacts to the music. And after a few takes he sticks on one thing that everyone goes 'That! That's the thing!' ..."
Is it still simple to write songs after all these years?
"Well, I keep it simple. I don't try to overcomplicate anything. If I think too much, it loses something, so I use my instinct and my heart."
Where do songs come from?
"The songs come from a higher place and they evoke some memories, some feelings in me and I just try and catch them. I don't know, it's a wonderful thing."
In a version of your new record there's a cover of John Lennon (Mind Games).
"The thing about John's songs is you don't really realise how great they are until you start to play them yourself and you listen to the words and sing them. It's godlike."
The Beatles have always been an inspiration. And you made them echo in a symbolic place.
"There's only one place in the world you'll go to when you record the strings. It's the studio 2 at Abbey Road. That's an amazing vibe, the room is incredible the sound in the room is amazing."
Your single Pretty Boy was remixed by Robert Smith from The Cure.
"I just emailed him and he agreed to do it. I thought my version was like The Cure and then when I heard his version I thought 'Ah, that sounds like The Cure!'.".
Everybody talks about music generated by artificial intelligence. Does it fascinates you?
"No, it has no feeling. You can create a robot that sounds like me, but it's not me."
Are you ready for your tour that will hit Italy in November?
"No, not yet. I'll start rehearsing in two weeks, then I'll be ready. I'm looking forward to it."
